Hallux Valgus
Hallux valgus is considered to be a medial deviation of the first metatarsal and lateral deviation and/or rotation of the hallux with or without medial soft tissue enlargement of the first metatarsal head. This condition can lead to painful motion of the joint or difficulty with footwear.

Hallux Rigidus
Hallux rigidus is a syndrome with symptoms related to degenerative arthritis of the great toe MTP joint. Symptoms are due to cartilage wear; altered joint mechanics; and osteophyte formation, particularly on the dorsal aspect of the first MT head. Hallux rigidus usually causes pain from impingement of dorsal osteophytes, range of motion (ROM) pain due to irregularity of the articular cartilage surface, pain from inflammation, and pain from shoe-related pressure on prominent osteophytes. This condition is seen in 2 distinct populations: those who present in adolescence and those who present in adulthood.
